‘Iran’s GDP can triple in medium term’

Deputy Head of Iran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines, and Agriculture (ICCIMA) Mohammadreza Bahraman said Iran has the potential to triple its GDP in the medium term, the ICCIMA portal reported.

Addressing a session of the ICCIMA Board of Representatives on Sunday, Bahraman said that the Iranian economy has the potential to increase its production capacity to almost $1000 billion in the medium term while it is currently making use of a maximum of one-third of this capacity.

Referring to the recently-held parliamentary elections in the country, he called on the newly-elected representatives and the candidates that are to compete in the run-off elections to make efforts to increase the country’s production and export capabilities as the only way to reduce poverty and improve the living conditions of Iranian people.

Increased production capability will lead to improved wages for workers, more taxes to be used by the government, and higher employment, Bahraman said.

He added that the era of governance based on oil and gas resources has come to an end, citing the country’s next year’s budget bill, only 25 percent of which relies on oil and gas revenues.
